Lot 4387 FINE LARGE CONFEDERATE SIDE KNIFE.

This well cutlered blade is 19.5" overall, 14" clip point blade, 4.5" clip is sharpened, 1.75" wide, .23" thick, saber ground, 4.5" iron cross guard with turned down quillons, nicely carved ovoid walnut grip, brass ferrule, pommel made from "flying eagle" penny. Several similar bowies shown in "CONFEDERATE BOWIE KNIVES" including an excavated example from Petersburg, VA. This is beautiful survivor in superior condition for a Confederate side knife. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, "as found", blade has forging flaws and finishing tool marks, scattered staining and pitting, hand worn patinaed grip, well defined folky carved design, 3" age crack on top edge.
